Considered the gateway to the Kaziranga National Park, the Golghat Region is also an agricultural and transportation hub for Assam and the surrounding areas. Not only is tea grown on its hillsides, but rice, the major food crop in Assam, is cultivated in its Brahmaputra River valley.
Silkworm and timber cultivation have long played a role in the regional economy, while oil production is a more recent addition.
The Golghat Region’s population of 946,000 has a literacy rate of more than 70 percent, which is quite high for India.
